چکیده

Geosciences Network (GEON) is a grand-challenge project to prototype cyberinfrastructure for the Earth Sciences. GEON is building a mechanism for integration and visualization of seismic events and their related fault orientations--referred by seismologists as focal mechanisms (or "beach balls") with other image (map) services using a service oriented architecture (SOA). The Kepler scientific workflow system provides capabilities to harvest and query datasets and services and process data using local and remote services. Using a workflow, we can combine the harvested datasets (such as seismic event locations) or map services of various formats with matching beach ball symbols, retrieved from a beach ball images database, for seismic events. The result is processed into a new dataset, using an ASCII to shapefile service, and integrated and visualized with other image services using ArcIMS. The new dataset can also be registered and searched within the GEONsearch registry.

Moment tensor and stress inversion for an active fault system in west part of Lut-Block, Iran

Iran is one of the most tectonically active regions on the Alpine-Himalayan earthquake belt. Eastern Iran, nowadays, is one of the most active regions of the country. The occurrence of several destructive earthquakes during the past 50 years provides the evidence for the seismic activity in this region. The earthquakes are mostly concentrated around the Lut-block. There are strike-slip fault sy...

Discovering Seismic Interactions after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake by Co-occurring Cluster Mining

In this study, we extract earthquake co-occurrence patterns for investigating mechanical interactions in the affected areas. To extract seismic patterns, both co-occurrence among seismic events in the event sequence and distances between the hypocenters to find hot spots must be considered. Most previous researches, however, have considered only one of these aspects. In contrast, we utilized co...

Faults and fractures detection in 2D seismic data based on principal component analysis

Various approached have been introduced to extract as much as information form seismic image for any specific reservoir or geological study. Modeling of faults and fractures are among the most attracted objects for interpretation in geological study on seismic images that several strategies have been presented for this specific purpose. In this study, we have presented a modified approach of ap...

Temporal variation of large intraplate earthquakes in coupled subduction zones

The focal mechanisms of intraplate earthquakes within subducting lithosphere are frequently used to infer large-scale stress regimes induced by slab-pull, bending or unbending, and lateral segmentation and undulations of the slab . Numerous studies have further postulated that the intraplate activity is influenced by transitory regional stress regimes such as those associated with interplate th...

Improving seismic image in complex structures by new solving strategies in the CO-CRS and the CO-CDS methods

Conventional seismic imaging possesses problem in exposing structural detail in complex geological media. Nevertheless, some recently introduced methods reduce this ambiguity to some extent, by using data based imaging operator or emancipation from the macro-velocity model. The zero offset common reflection surface (ZO-CRS) stack method is a velocity independent imaging technique which is frequ...
